W.H.J. MILLAR
Harry Millar went to Queen's University from Regent House and won a place on
the right wing in both the Varsity and Ulster teams in his first 'fresher' year.
He was a footballer to his finger tips, very nippy and elusive, and a sound
place kicker from close positions. He was tipped for a place on the Irish team
for many seasons before he gained his first cap, interestingly on the left wing,
against England at Lansdowne Road on 10th February 1951. He played six times
for Ireland and might have gained a seventh cap but a further game against England
was cancelled due to the sudden death of King George VI in 1952.
Possibly his most celebrated performance was against Scotland at Murrayfield
on 24th February 1951. He reverted to full back, as a result of injury to George
Norton, after only 13 minutes of play and performed heroically in the subsequent
14-man victory by 6 points to 5.
Harry Millar practised as a G.P. for many years in Newtownards.
