BLAIR
MAYNE
The legendary Blair Mayne first played for Ards when he was still at Regent
House School. He captained Ards in 1933/34. He then left Ards to play Senior
rugby, first at Queen's University and later at Malone. He did, however, continue
to play for Ards when Senior commitments permitted. Blair Mayne gained his first
cap for Ireland in 1937. Although he was an outstanding success in Sammy Walker's
British Lions team that toured South Africa in 1938, he gained only six caps
prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. This great Ardsman's military
exploits - awarded the Distinguished Service Order four times - are, of course,
another well-chronicled story.
